Electrical & Computer Engineering Welcome

Welcome from CHAIR

Welcome to Electrical and Computer Engineering at Southern University and A & M College (Flagship Institution of the only HBCU System in the United States). The natural beauty of the SU campus grounds is manifested by the scenic environment of the land, decorated by the gleaming Mississippi River, the Lake Kernan and the natural ravines. The aesthetic of the flagship campus is also enriched and highlighted by the historical Scott's Bluff - overlooking the mighty Mississippi River and gigantic bridges.

Inspired and energized by the former Governor Pinchback, our diligent ECE people in the PBS Pinchback Hall follow a legacy of striving for excellence. Traditionally Southern University is viewed as a Teaching-Focused University. The prominent “Scope and Sequence" model is well applied to plan the scope and depth of ECE curricula and course instruction, to ensure comprehensive and cohesive student understanding, as well as the logical progression of learning! A majority of our ECE professors have formerly gained the comprehensive teaching experience of instructing about 200 classes with zero assistance, containing around 50 diverse undergraduate and graduate courses. Our individual ECE professors also demonstrate high professionalism and broad competence via independently instructing up to 12 diverse graduate courses with zero assistance on campus.

Powered by the spirits of the Jaguar, ECE at Southern University has made exceptional achievement in the fields of science and engineering. Based on the existing academic records, we are proud to report to the global academic community that our selected research works are qualified to be officially and orally presented at rank "A" top-tier International Conferences (such as IEEE Congress, ASME Congress, SAE Congress) organized in any top country worldwide. Nurtured by the Mississippi River's fertile soil, inherent creativity is deeply rooted in the minds of our ECE people. At our picturesque home on the flagship campus, three distinguished professors have made substantial intellectual contributions (e.g. Sole Authorship) to the key Top-Tier engineering journals including ASME Transactions or IEEE Transactions, or both. We anticipate that more colleagues might be able to produce Top-Tier level research outcomes on SU campus (e.g. Nature, Science, IEEE Transactions, ASME Transactions, SAE Transactions) in the near future. Meanwhile some ECE students have already been recognized as the first authors of the rank "A" IEEE international conferences.

ECE is indeed strong in the engineering applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It is convenient and straightforward to confirm the details on the IEEE Xplore platform that almost all major schemes of AI have already been implemented or enhanced in our research works, such as Fuzzy Logic Systems (FLC), Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Hybrid Fuzzy Neural Network, Evolutionary Computation (EC), Genetic Algorithms (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Nonlinear Component Analysis (NCA), Independent Component Analysis (ICA), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Fuzzy C-Means Clustering (FCM), Fuzzy Stochastic Control (FSC) and Nonlinear Least Squares Estimation (LSE).

Finally I sincerely wish to send "Good Hope" to all our ECE faculty members, staffs, current & future students, alumni & alumna, as well as domestic & international academic friends. Let us collaborate to advance scientific discovery and to uplift human civilization!
