Department of Computer Science to host Robotics & AI Camp for middle, high school students this summer

The Department of Computer Science at Southern University and A&M College will host the Robotics & AI Camp this summer, offering middle and high school students a free, weeklong opportunity to explore robotics and artificial intelligence through hands-on activities and mentorship.

Now in its seventh year, the camp has traditionally focused on robotics. This summer, organizers have expanded the curriculum to include artificial intelligence, giving students more opportunities to engage with emerging technologies.

Participants will take part in interactive lessons, lab activities, and collaborative team projects designed to spark their interest in STEM fields. Activities will include building robots, conducting AI experiments, engaging in creative challenges, and attending speaker sessions featuring industry professionals and academic experts.

“The goal of the camp is to inspire the next generation of innovators by demystifying AI and robotics, promoting digital literacy, and increasing representation of underrepresented students in STEM,” said Dr. Lynette Jackson, associate professor of computer science. “Through mentorship, exposure, and hands-on learning, we aim to show that STEM is creative, collaborative, and accessible.”

The camp is open to students ages 11 to 17 from the Metropolitan Baton Rouge region. Two sessions are planned:

  • July 7–11 for ages 11–13, and
  • July 14–18 for ages 14–17.

Each day will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Henry Thurman, Jr. Hall, in Rooms N204 and N205. A limited number of spots remain available for the second session.
