Jaguar Athletics kicks off Pete Richardson Classic with annual Extravaganza
Legendary R&B music group Midnight Starr headlines an exciting celebration as Southern University Athletics honors legendary head coach Pete Richardson at the second annual SU Football Kickoff Extravaganza on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
Zydeco artist Keith Frank and local blues band Vince Hutchinson and the Heavy Storm Band will join Midnight Starr to provide the soundtrack for the three-hour concert that honors Pete Richardson, one of Southern’s most beloved figures in the last 25 years.
Richardson spent 17 seasons as the head football coach on The Bluff and ushered in the "Golden Age of Jaguar football." His teams won six SWAC Championships from 1993 through 2003 and led Southern to five Black College National Championships.
The fundraising event serves as the official kickoff to the Jaguars home schedule and precedes the inaugural Pete Richardson Classic against Langston University on Sept. 15 at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Southern University Athletics honored eight of the most highly decorated football players in the program’s history, including Hall of Famers Mel Blount and Aeneas Williams, during the inaugural SU Football Kickoff Extravaganza in 2017.
Tickets for both events are available at the SU Ticket Office. For more information, call 225-771-3171.
