SU Ag Center and College of Ag host 'Ag Week' on Sept. 11-16

The Southern University Ag Center and College of Ag have partnered with SU Athletics to host an Ag Game on Sept. 16 against Alabama A&M University in A.W. Mumford Stadium. The campus has planned a week of events for the community and agriculture students leading up to the game.

Festivities will kick off on Sept. 11 at 9 a.m. in The Educational Forest, near the Intramural Sports Complex, with Fireside Chats: Recharging Your Mind, Reconnecting with Nature. Ag students will be led through mental health activities including interactive art therapy, imagery, and guided meditation to help them reconnect with nature.

The Connecting Green Synergies: Capacity Building Day will be held on Sept. 12 at 9 a.m. in the Valdry Center for Philanthropy. This event is open to all students majoring in Agriculture but is specifically organized for Agricultural Sciences and Urban Forestry majors. Students will be able to participate in professional development skills and networking opportunities with an agricultural company during the event.

A Community Garden Giveaway will be held on Sept. 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the Jaguar Park. This event is free and open to the community while supplies last.

A Student Hometown Cuisine Cookoff for Southern University students majoring in Agriculture will also be held on Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. in the kitchen of Pinkie Thrift Hall. At 6 p.m., the Ag Center and the College of Ag will be highlighted on the Overtime Talk Show with Roman Banks show at TJ Ribs, located at 2324 South Acadian Thruway.

Jagie’s Research Rampage: A Social Media Adventure, which will highlight some of the Ag Center’s research projects will be held throughout the day on Sept. 14 on the SU Ag Center’s social media platforms.

A Brunch & Learn Student Forum will also be held on Sept. 14 beginning at 11 a.m. in the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union’s Cotillion Ballroom. The forum will feature USDA Deputy Administrator of the Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS) and SU College of Ag alum Arthur Neal, as the keynote speaker. The Brunch and Learn Forum is open to Ag students who RSVP through their email.

Students will be able to participate in the “Kick back and Chill”: Ag Game Gear Giveaway on Sept. 15 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. in the lobby of Pinkie Thrift Hall. During this event, students will be able to make ice cream, receive information on the programs available within the College of Agricultural, Human, and Environmental Sciences, and receive Ag Gear for the Sept. 16 football game.

The SU Ag Center and the College of Ag will host a Field to Fork Tailgate from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. on the game day experience lot of the A. W. Mumford Stadium Fieldhouse. The tailgate will include food, cooking demonstrations, student presentations, and a live performance by Lil Nate. Ilera Holistic Healthcare will also be on hand to provide information on telemedicine during the tailgate. This event is free and open to the community.

The Southern Jaguars will face off against the Alabama Bulldogs at 6 p.m. on Sept. 16.
