Dr. Barbara West Carpenter, a native of Baton Rouge, is a tenured professor who currently serves as Dean of International Education. Prior to being named to this position, she served as the Director of the Division of Continuing Education, Distance Education and the Center for Service-Learning at Southern University. She also has served as Project Director for the University's Agency for International Development programs and she has participated in development projects in Jamaica, Sierra Leone, the Gambia, and coordinated study abroad programs in Mexico, Senegal and Italy.

Dr. Carpenter's community and professional affiliations include the March of dimes, Phi Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity, Rotary International of Baton Rouge, and Phi Upsilon Omicron Honor Society. She chairs the Board of Commissioners for the Baton Rouge Housing Authority. She also has authored numerous articles and has been recognized for her outstanding community service at the local, national and international levels.
