The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) announced November 27, that Southern University and A&M College is one of 43 providers from 22 states and the District of Columbia to receive accreditation for their educator preparation programs.

Southern University program associate and recruiter for the Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes Honors College, Eric G. Pugh was elected as the new national vice president for the National Association of African American Honors Program (NAAAHP).

Southern University mass communication professor, Darrell Roberson, has been selected National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) Faculty Fellowship recipient for the January 2018 NATPE Marketplace and Conference in Miami Beach, Florida.

For the third year, Diola Bagayoko, dean of the Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes Honors College and distinguished professor of physics, has received a grant of more than $250,000 from the National Science Foundation (NSF), through the Louisiana Board of Regents.

During the last week in October, a group of scholars from Southern University Baton Rouge attended the 2017 Leadership Institute in Washington, D.C. The event is described as a power-packed four-day conference that prepares carefully selected students from the 47 publicly supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to compete in today’s very competitive global workforce.

Sandra Chaisson Brown, professor, College of Nursing and Allied Health, was recently inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. The induction was held in at the Marriott Marquis hotel in Washington, DC, October 7, 2017, in conjunction with the 2017 Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 to Rainer Weiss (LIGO/Virgo Collaboration), Barry C. Barish (LIGO/Virgo Collaboration), and Kip S. Thorne (LIGO/Virgo Collaboration), "for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves."

Student population is expanding at Southern University Baton Rouge. In particular, for the first time in several years, the University experienced significant growth in important sectors this fall.

The Southern University Baton Rouge Environmental Toxicology department recently received renewal of a Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute (FAMRI) grant for 2017-2018.
