Audition Requirements

Auditions are required for acceptance into the Music Program; however, probationary acceptance without an audition or with a partial audition is allowed in certain circumstances and at the discretion of the respective applied faculty and the program leader.

For more information about scheduling auditions, or for any further questions, please contact the appropriate applied faculty member, or the Music Program main office.



Woodwinds

  1. Perform one of the following:
    • A solo
    • Three orchestral excerpts from standard repertoire
    • Two etudes of contrasting styles
  2. All major scales–three octaves where possible
  3. Sight-reading

High Brass:

Trumpet Studio Audition Requirements

  1. Perform one of the following:
    • A solo in the classical style
    • A jazz tune with improvisation (please provide your own Aebersold recording)
    • Three orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
    • Two etudes of contrasting styles
  2. All major scales–two octaves where possible
  3. Sight-reading

 

French Horn Studio Audition Requirements

  1. Perform one of the following:
    • A solo
    • Three orchestral excerpts from standard repertoire
    • Two etudes of contrasting styles
  2. All major scales–three octaves where possible
  3. Sight-reading

Low Brass:
  1. All 12 major scales throughout your practical range
  2. A solo with contrasting stylistic sections (technical and lyrical) or two contrasting etudes which showcase playing ability in each style.

  1. Memorize and perform the Forty (40) essential drum rudiments
  2. Prepared snare drum solo
  3. Sight reading of percussion literature

Piano

B.M. Concentration in Piano Performance
  1. Scales, major and minor (natural, harmonic and melodic), and arpeggios, major and minor, four octaves, hands together at a fast tempo
  2. Sight reading
  3. One piece from each of the following periods, all works are recommended to be played from memory:
    • Baroque: Two-Part Invention, Sinfonia or a Prelude and Fugue from Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, or a major work by Bach.
    • Classical: A fast movement of a sonata by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, or Schubert.
    • Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary: Any piece of advanced difficulty.

B.M. Concentration in Music Education
  1. Scales, major and minor (natural, harmonic and melodic), and arpeggios, major and minor, four octaves, hands together at a fast tempo
  2. Sight reading.
  3. One piece from each of the following periods, at least two must be from memory:
    • Baroque: Little Preludes, Two-Part Invention or Sinfonia of Bach.
    • Classical: First movement of a sonata or sonatina by Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven
    • Romantic, Impressionistic, or Contemporary: Any piece equivalent in difficulty to the sonata/sonatina movement above.

Voice

Repertoire should include two (2) selections, one in English and another song in a language (including Italian, French, German, Spanish, Latin, etc.). However, the absence of the other language selection should not preclude the student from auditioning.
