Grant Opportunities

Grant information for students in the Southern University School of Education

A grant is a form of financial aid awarded to students based primarily on financial need. Like scholarships, grants generally do not require repayment. Some grants may require repayment if specified program or service requirements are not met. Grants are often funded by the federal government, state agencies, educational institutions, or other organizations.

Louisiana Geaux Teach Grant

The Geaux Teach scholarship program was established to provide scholarships to students enrolled in teacher preparation programs or alternate certification programs approved by BESE.

The maximum annual award is $5,000. Awards apply only to tuition, required fees, and instructional materials and are used after all other state or institutional aid is applied.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. United States citizen and Selective Service compliant, if required.
  2. Louisiana resident for at least two years prior to July 1 before enrollment.
  3. Minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA.
  4. Full-time enrollment in an approved teacher preparation or alternate certification program.
TEACH Grant

The TEACH Grant Program provides up to $4,000 per year for students completing coursework toward a teaching career.

Important: TEACH Grants require a service obligation. If the service obligation is not completed, the grant converts to a loan with interest.

  1. Teach full-time for four years in a low-income school.
  2. Teach in a high-need field.
