Undergraduate Degree Program

The undergraduate degree program in mathematics and physics with a concentration in mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, Physics and SMED at Southern University has been developed to prepare students in a wide variety of areas of mathematics. In addition to servicing students from other disciplines like computer science, physics, engineering, and biology, the department offers intermediate and advanced courses to prepare students with a sound foundation to enter careers that make extensive use of mathematics. Requirements for Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics and Physics with a concentration in Mathematics

A student seeking to obtain a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Physics with a concentration in Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics, Physics and SMED must complete a minimum of 128 semester hours with a grade of "C" or better in all mathematics courses. These hours must include forty-three (43) hours in mathematics in courses numbered above MATH 200. It is strongly recommended that a mathematics major take more than the minimum 43 hours required, particularly if the student intends to attend graduate school in Mathematics. All majors are REQUIRED to secure a certified 'Curriculum Balance Sheet' from the Math Program Office: 344 T. T. The required 43 hours for majors in Mathematics must include:

Any MATH in the 480s are excluded from the required 43 hours for a mathematics major.

Requirements for a Minor in Mathematics

Students pursuing a minor in Mathematics are required to complete 24 hours of Mathematics at the 200 level^** and above⁺⁺. Students majoring in Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science are strongly urged to minor in Mathematics.

The required 24 hours for a minor in mathematics must include:

The remaining four (4) hours for the minor can be earned from the courses  MATH 250, MATH 276, MATH 330, MATH 364*, MATH 365, MATH 370*, MATH 462 or from the mathematics  electives listed above. 

* Note: This course is 4 credit hours.

** The following 200 level courses are EXCLUDED from the required 24 hours for a minor in Mathematics: MATH 200, 203, 204, 205, 274, and 275.

++ Any MATH in the 480s are EXCLUDED from the required 24 hours for a mathematics minorl.
